Overcome by Poop

November 9th 2009 by Jen in Family, Randomness

It all started back in September.  You read that right: September.  Our family has had some form of sickness since September.  (It is now November.  I seriously cannot express how much I don’t want us to be sick again for a long while.)  Dinah caught a cold, then about a week later I got whatever she had.  A few days later, to my horror, Dan said that he wasn’t feeling well, although his symptoms were vastly different.  This was the time when tons of people we know had the flu, even swine flu.  About a week later, as I was still dealing with the remnants of a cough, Dinah got another cold.  Our wonderful pediatrician told us to hang in there, that it’d just last a few days and she should feel better.  She did.  Then last week, Dinah had a 101.4F fever.  Her two colds culminated in an ear infection.   She started amoxicillinan.   And we began to be overcome by poop.  Her diapers could not hold it.  I’d go in to get her after a nap and the entire front of her onesie would be soaked with runny poop along with a basketball-size stain on the crib sheet.  After playing in her exersaucer, I’d pick her up to find that she had a huge wet spot on her sleeper.  The same thing happened the next day as I was taking her out of her high chair.  We buy good diapers at Diapers.com.  And the poop would leak out the front, sides, and back of her diaper.  I was doing daily laundry and she was getting daily mid-day sponge baths after each defilement.  I was up to my elbows.  And full of praise to the Lord that we have a washer and dryer in our unit.  I don’t know if it was a reaction to the medication or just a side effect of the ear infection, but thankfully her bowels are back to normal and we are no longer overcome by poop.

Madalyn had a few rounds of colds and then an ear infection, too. The runny poop is a common side affect of the amoxicillan, unfortunately. I don’t think Madalyn’s ear infection went away with the first round, so I think she is going to have to take amoxicillan again. I loaded her up with yogurt and any kind of food I could think of to help firm things up, and somehow we got through. I hope you and your family start feeling better soon!

My goodness! You’ve given me so much to look forward to, Jen. :-) I’m glad everyone is feeling better. See you very soon!
