I don’t think this is what George Washington Carver had in mind…
August 22nd 2007 by Dan in UncategorizedWhen I originally decided to write this post, I decided on the above title and it turns out that I was right… technically.
After Jen and I got married, we started buying two kinds of peanut butter at the store - full fat for Dan and reduced fat for Jen. I resisted switching to reduced fat peanut butter for a while but eventually gave in (Note: I wasn’t getting fatter or anything, I just got tired of having to buy two kinds of peanut butter). However, last weekend I made a shocking discovery. I was making myself a delectable reduced fat so-called peanut butter sandwich when I noticed that the label on the “Peanut Butter” jar said that it had 25% less fat than peanut butter. I said to my self, “Self, that’s odd.” Why would peanut butter refer to itself in the third person? And then, I read more of the label. Just below the “25% less fat than peanut butter” statement, I found this in the smaller print: “Peanut Butter Spread, 60% peanuts.”
We’ve been had! Just think of the countless Americans who travel to the grocery store to buy some of that creamy (or crunchy if you’re one of those people) dreamy peanut buttery goodness only to find themselves duped into buying something called peanut spread. I would say that George Washington Carver would be very upset at this development, but as I found out today - contrary to popular belief, he didn’t invent peanut butter! So, not only was I lead to believe that I was actually eating peanut butter sandwiches for the past two years, but I’ve also thought that GWC (as the cool kids say) invented peanut butter. It turns out that it was some guy named Joseph Rosefield.
So, I guess the real question is - who invented Peanut Spread? Obviously, someone needs to be held accountable for this mass-defrauding of the public. Unfortunately, I didn’t have that much time to research the mystical origins of peanut spread… but I’m pretty sure that it was Al Gore who invented it just before he came up with this whole Internet thing. What would we do without that guy?

hey Jen and Dan! I loved reading through your blog. Jen you are still the same looney toon…ha! As for the pb…I have researched the best pb and have found that Jiff extra crunchy is the best for sandwiches (with sliced banana of course), and Reeses is the best for cookies. Also, REAL pb is nasty….have you had real peanut butter made from purely peanuts? Go to a whole foods and push the button on the peanut machine and try it. It is so gross and you will be glad they added all that high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated fats! MMmmm…peanut spread is great! Did you also know that Pringles is not really considered a potato chip? They are made from dehydrated potatoes but are shaped to look like they were sliced from a potato…it is a scam!

This is the funniest thing I’ve read in a long time! I’ve seen that same “25% less fat than peanut butter” but never even thought about it. But, I do have to say, I can’t eat that reduced fat stuff. I just stay away from peanut butter altogether except for maybe once a year. I find that if I start eating peanut butter sandwiches I can’t stop. It’s best to stop the evil before it starts! Thanks for the laugh!
